Hey!!! Glad you are here.. I am sooo excited to have you on the board to take on these subjects! I have been watching CNN's coverage on the teenage pregnancy "pacts". What is your take on this? Why would such a large group of girls do something so drastic? Is it attention seeking? Is it just immaturity?

Keep in mind that we don't But I do believe that teenage pregnancy has almost become glorified with films like "Juno" (which I absolutely loved) and "Knocked Up" (which I thought left much to be desired). Years ago, teenagers were sent away to have their babies but today teen pregnancy is more respectable. The research on this is clear though........girls who get pregnant as teens often don't have much to look forward to in their futures. Parents need to be much more involved here in talking to their kids. I can't say that enough.Do you find this valuable? |

It really is sad to think of so many girls cut their youth to the quick by choosing to have babies so young. I have a few friends who had babies in their late teens or early 20's and there is always that sense of "I missed out on so much". As a mature woman who was ready for the responsibilities of parenthood, the task of raising kids can still sometimes feel overwhelming. I can't imagine going through the process as a child still not yet ready for the responsibilities of what is ahead of you.

True. But what if that's all there is to look forward to?

No. Sometimes all they have to look forward to is a baby that will give them the love that is often missing from their lives. Of course, there are many other reasons to get pregnant, but I think an inability to clearly see the future is often a culprit.

The question is, will the media follow up on the hardship of this "pact" of girls after the baby is born and when the real struggle and work begins. By putting the story on the news over and over it still glorifies what these girls have done in a way. In the eyes of a teenager this story may still appear intriguing. What needs to be shown is the difficulty in the decision after the pregnancy and the baby showers are over and the girls are home alone with these babies.

I think one of the issues that comes out of this story is how can we make birth control accessible for teens? Many are having sex...I just wish that a) their parents had given them a good solid sex talk when they were young, and b) they had access to good quality info and birth control if they needed it. I think every kid deserves this much.

I agree with you.. I don't understand the resistance of making birth control available to teenagers. Look at the teenage pregnancy rate in this country compared to other contemporary countries. The U.S. has such a high rate. It is quite obvious that teens are having sex, why not educate them to protect themselves.

Another interesting thing about this story is the fact that funding cuts had eliminated Gloucester High's sex education classes. The school had also forbid the distribution of condoms and other contraception without parental consent (which led to the angry resignation of the school's doctor and nurse back in May. To make matters worse, the nearest birth control clinic was over 20 miles away. What's a kid supposed to do?

I suppose one big question is why? Why are we so afraid of this topic? Is it religion, modesty, misinformation? Sex is something almost everyone has at some point in their life. It's natural and necessary for procreation. So why are we so afraid to discuss it or educate our children about it?

Having the baby WOULD work......they didn't cut the high school's day care program for infants of students!

Janell, I'm curious what the pregnancy rates are in areas where birth control (pills and condoms) are very accessible to teens, versus areas where they are not. I.e., if "Sally" lives in a town where condoms are given out at the school nurse's office - and "Mary" lives in an area where the school nurse is precluded from discussing birth control and abortion - which girl is statistically at a higher risk of unwanted pregnancy? Do you know of any studies that have explored this issue? Is this really an issue of "availability of birth control" - are there other cultural context issues that play a stronger role ("this is just the way we do things where I live")? I've lived in a few different metropolitan areas and also rural areas - and I'm always intrigued by the various ways that our "sub-cultures" within the one same "American" culture can view ethical, moral, and lifestyle choices. What is "good" and "correct" in one neighborhood might be "aberrant" just a few miles away ... fascinating ... but leading back to our girls, can we tell a girl that having a child in your teens is a "poor choice" when her entire culture tells her that it's not only "ok" but "desirable"? We have lots of work to do ...
