Sex Scandals and Politics
Aug 15 2008, 8:50 AM EDT | Post edited: Aug 15 2008, 8:50 AM EDT
In light of the recent developments with Senator John Edward's extramarital affair, I am curious to get opinions on your thoughts about sex and politics. Should this really matter when it comes to electability? Many past public figures have had affairs in the past. Some were sweeped under the rug and some were dragged through the public forum like a circus, ie.. impeachment of President Clinton for his tryst with Monica!
Here is my question. Should what our elected officials do in their private sex lives make a difference to us when it comes to their job of serving the people? Are these smoke screens of distraction by opposing parties, or do we as a society really have the right to know?

This is an easy one for me... I think it's vitally important to know.

Leadership is about character. If someone is willing to bend the rules, cheat, put their personal agenda/needs ahead of those around them... then I don't want them as my leader or elected official. If their morals and ethics are compromised in the most intimate part of their lives, where else are they willing to compromise?

Easy for me too. While I might not care what a presidents' sexual predilections are, I do care that he has made an oath to another person - someone he at one point claimed to love, honor and cherish - and broke it for the sake of sex (or, even "love"). If he cannot be trusted to honor his commitment to his wife then I think I'd be foolish to believe that under truly "global" pressure he will honor his commitment to the American people. He will act in his own best interest rather than his family's or his country's. Maybe we shouldn't have married presidents ... and they could enjoy their sexuality in any way they choose ... it's the honor of the oath that is important for me. Do you find this valuable?

Ok so playing devils advocate here; Some of our most revered Presidents have had affairs, such as Thomas Jefferson, FDR, JFK, and of course Bill Clinton. All of these men were looked upon as great leaders of this country. They all made significant contributions to this countries history, all the while carrying on sexual affairs. Does that lesson their impact, or did it appear to change the way they handled their integrity where the country was concerned.
For me the difference was, with the exception of Bill Clinton, most of these were affairs that went under the radar, the public at large didn't know about them. Now the media will dig around and find as much dirt on these people as possible to throw in the public eye. I don't truly believe that sexual misconduct is more prevalent now, I just believe we hear about the sensationalism of it more because of the media.

Good point - we didn't invent sexual (or any of the other kinds of) misconduct. We just live in a time when the media makes sure that it's all aired very publicly. However, my concern isn't about "sex" or "sexual misconduct" - I'm concerned about ANY sort of misconduct that demonstrates a lack of honesty and integrity. I don't care that any particular president's failings are related to "sex" ... JFK and others were "integrity challenged" and their particular Achille's heel was in their groin area ... but there are others whose weakness might be tax evasion or greed or plain old "power". In the end, what is important to me is that our president be someone of strong moral character - someone who values honesty and is a person of their word. I know that the temptations faced by higher level politicians must be incredibly difficult to refuse, but I still want to believe that the person we elect to our highest office has enough integrity to hold up under the pressure. Gimme Jimmy Stewart in Mr Smith goes to Washington ... :-) Do you find this valuable?

to me, i feel like its none of our business about others sexual lives, and i think its wrong for the media to get that person with people.... although i see the point of if these people are making bad decisions in their lives, how do we know that they are making the right decisions for our country...but to me..all politiciians are lying, decieving non trustworthy people...sry i am not into politics at all!!!! just my opinion Do you find this valuable?
